Changing media on AC70

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you change your water on a regular basis the carbon is not needed. With my ACs I wash the sponge on a weekly basis with hot tap water and rinse the biomax in tank water. With the method you will remove much more particle debries and build a strong BB colony in the Biomax.

rinsing the sponge in "hot tap water" is a sure way to kill off any BB living in the sponge.. aka dont do that

theres no need to rinse media unless it is restricting waterflow.. at that time put the media in a bucket of tap water and give it a few squeezes and swishes and that will take care of it...

as for media.. the sponge works great.. i use sponge media and scrubbies in all my hob filters as well as a piece of filterfloss for water polishing..

The sponge is designed for removing mechanical waste the biomax is designed for housing the BB colonies. By cleaning the sponge frequently in hot tap water you remove most all debries and prevent the BB from colonizing the sponge. The BB colony will now trive in the biomax. Also by frequently cleaning the sponge you remove waste before it breaks down into ammonia. This leads to lower nitrate levels not to mention clearer water.

So your recommending using the sponge and then two layers of the bio-media, no carbon?
I had ran my AC with just sponges at one point, it worked great. I have not bought carbon for at least 4 years now, it is a waste of money. Now I just have a sponge, some filter floss and 2 bags of biomax. Keep up on water changes and you should be good. Also.. never use tap water on any established filter media!!! You will kill all of your BB, you need that. To be safe, always use tank water.
