So I'm changing my playsand out for peace river gravel due to problems with filters plugging and irratation on the bottom of the rays. I decided to do half at a time and found now that I've got sand on one side and gravel on the other all the rays lay on the sand side even tho I feed on the gravel side all the time. Has been like this for 2 weeks. Even the rays that had problems with disk irratation lay there. Do you think it's due to new enviroment or due to the fact that the sand feels more natual to them?

It may be that the sand is more comfortable to them. Personally, I would have gone with the pool filter sand as opposed to the two substrate choices that you've currently given them. But, it's your tank, do as you see fit.

how big is the gravel? any sharp edges? would make it worse on thier disk if its sharp( they can also hide under the sand so they proly feel safer)

I would have went with it due to it's cheaper and also looks good but the sand I've found around here looks alot different than the sand I've seen on various threads here and is silica based. It looks more like the snd found in ashtrays.

It's the same gravel miles used in one of his tanks. Carib sea peace river which is very small and fairly smooth can't remember the thread where he has a picture of it. They seem to be able to bury in both if they want to. Just thought it was wierd why they seem to avoid it?

probably cause its what they have had.... once you swap the rest out all should be okay its just new to them....
