Changing to Sand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i got my pool filter sand at a pool store.
think it was 7 or 8 bucks per 50lbs.
for a 55g you would need only one bag,but dont use the whole bag.lol

heres a thread with pix on how i clean sand also.

I just did this my self (switching from gravel to sand), I just used King's Play Sand it is just washed beach sand and I havent had any issues with it when I vacuum poop it doesnt even get sucked up unless I stick the vac right in the sand.....

thats like a tease, dont rays like sand?

and you are lucky to find sand that cheap at depot lowes.
they want 20 a box here for it.

dont know what depot/lowes will charge, i got ,mine at the quarry. but im guessing atleast 3x the price, for 1/2 the volume

the retic tank i used estes marine sand. needed something i knew for sure wouldent cut him up, and i could find colors i liked to go with my ray/rams (black and white mix-dont ask why)

and as far as the dust, its just that, thats lethal, the DUST. once its rinsed well, and saturated with water, theres no way for it to dust up. my SA cichlids, even fancy pleco's and pacu's have never had any health issues *knock on wood*.

on that note, i wouldent use it for heavy sand sifters or fish that bury themselves however, since the sand is produced by CRUSHING quartz. the crushing of the rock, gives them a diaganol break, and in-turn makes some grains sharp.
