Channa Auramanticulata sexing

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
with aurantimaculata the males do havae a more narrower, more arrow shaped skull , while females have a rounder /blunter head. Males devolpope larger fins in
so the lower one on the 1-st pic has to be male ? and in the middle female ? on the vid the lower one is more active dancing. what can u say about that one ? is much more bigger than those two and sitting apart

the one photographed above is female. sorry my pc closed before i finished my last reply.

Sexing with pic.s or video can be tricky as the angle can change the colors of shapes drastically. I'll list what i know about sexing them below, keep in mind that all size and shape references when sexing them is relative to the body size and often hidden or misleadng in over weight fish. also the diffences a become more pronounced with age so the younger the fish the more
difficult it can be to see the differences.

typically males have a head tha is narrower and more arrow shaped, base of the skull wider then the body where it joins , their skullis are preportionally larger with a sleaker slender body.
their Dorsal fin is taller again in ratio to the width of the body and has a wider blue band along the top.

females are typically large and more heavy bodied fish, the skull is more rounded and blunt and equal in width to the body where the skull joins. their dorsal fin is shorter in ratio to the witdh of the body and has heavier dark barring with only a very narrow blue band running along the top.

behaviour wise females tend to linger in or below the floating cover, they dont tend to get involved with fighting until they have chosen a mate, they will typically at hat point kill off any others . Males are more active when young and will dance and fight eachother until one impreses the female enough to be selecteId as her mate. (if hes lucky as the female sometimes will reject all males and kill them all) So if you have 2 dancing and flaring at eachother while a bigger blker one watches you likly hav 2 males 1 female. once a pair forms the male becomes more of a cave dweller and the others are killed off.

hope that helps!
