too much food, and why using a heater in a subtropical tank ?

The heater isnt on, and these fish are not mine my freind simply asked me to ask on here,

He doesnt over feed them so why is the fish so fat??

Im pretty sure hes just looking after that Polypterus Senegalus for a couple weeks or so??

Like i said these fish are not mine

Ok, well when people start a thread with "Noticed a rather large belly on my snakehead..." it usually means they are talking about THEIR fish!

Anyway, back on topic, as Brucki said, they are just over fed or have just had a good meal before the photo.
Don't mean to appear rude, but if you and your friend are asking questions like this here, then one would assume you wouldn't know how much food is over feeding!

Do yourself a favor and listen to knowledgable Channa keepers. It will help you in the long run!

Hi no you didnt appear rude atall mate i can understand experienced channa keepers gettin slightly annoyed when people dont keep them under the correct conditions,

I only created the thread because my mate hasnt got the internet and isnt a member of the forum, i just offered to ask the question on here.

He said he only feeds them 3 or 4 times a week and that the photo was taken just before they were ment to be fed.

I said to him that they are probably just over weight lol do channa tend to put on weight fast then??

I have listened to your advice on numerous occasions and every time i have my channa look better and genrally seem happier :)

Also people that work in most fish shops dont seem to know anything about the fish they are selling to people which doesnt help others who are new in the hobbie, when i bought my gachua i was told it was a community fish lol

Hi,

espescially subtropical channa feed as mcuh as they can, which is very unhealthy for them.
A friend of mine (the second one that bred aurantimaculata) had the species in large numbers for years, and no breeding at all. So hi gave some specimen to a veterinary university were the fish were guttet and so it became visible, only fat inside, no visible genitals. genitals have been transformed to fat !!
Tghe fish werent fed really much, but it was too much for the subtrropical aurantis. But since then we know, fish that look like that you'Äve posted will never ever breed in their live. !

And feeding them 3 to 4 times a week is pretty much too much !!

3 to 4 times a month would be better, really, thats NO joke
