Was it the same with your auranti,no water movement at all? My little guy is really scared of the sponge filter for some reason and is much calmer when I turn it off.

My auranti had a really small filter running, no bubbles just a small internal filter with a submersible pump that was hidden amongst driftwood.

Never had the opportunity to keep channa and unfortunately never will. How do you maintain water quality? Heavy water changes?

Deep sand bed substrate will help keep nitrites and ammonia down.

Nitrates will be a bit high
