I bought a PAIR of Channa bleheri for about a week ago.

When can i be sure that they are a genuine pair? They haven´t shown aggression yet and i have had them for a week. Is that enough to say that they have bonded?

What signs shall i look out for. They are currently staying together and eat together and everything looks fine. There are small show offs from the bigger one sometimes but it doesn't look like he means to hurt the other.

These are my first Channas and i really hope that it will work out good.

hi, they are about 10 cm and i´m not sure that they really are a pair. The thing is that i bought them with a good chance that they where a pair but he could not guarantee it. The fish keeper took them straight from the importer and he said that they usually are very good at finding pairs.

So in the worst case i have a male and a female that i have to hold separate.

The aquarium has been running for 10 days now and i have used nitrivec to start up with so the values are fine. A lot of plants and hiding places.

But my question is still; what grade of aggression means that they newer will form a pair.

Is it normal with some chasing and biting between them or are they supposed to get along all of the time?

Im actually wondering the exact same thing. Bought a pair of bleheri some weeks ago, about 10 cm.. but it seems very hard to tell. Mine have some nipped fins, but they rest on top of each other and share cave and such

Hi, I have three bleheri and they behave in the same way, nothing to worry about its natural for them. For them pairing off it will take them the time they need.

As said, you should notice them pairing up. Im sure they're similar to gachuas, so the pair would also stake out their territory and chase out intruders.

if they are staying together or sharing a cave together ,then that is a possative sign. however unless you whitnessed fry with them in the lfs ,there is no way to say if they are a true bonded pair. an unbonded pair ,even of the same sex can live happy together on occasions , like wise a bonded pair can still have fights and be aggresive with each other . the answer is just waiting and see what develops as the guys have allready mentioned

they should be at sub-trop temps from now untli around april ,so take that into consideraton ,if you have not already

cheers col

thanks for all the answers and especially the last one. I´m going to move the channas to a aquarium just for them, (they are sharing the current aquarium with congo tetras right now) and then i can drop the temperature a bit and see what happens.
Would bee so happy if i saw some small guys one day.

no worries mate , and yes if you can move them to tank of there own that would be great , if kept at tropical year your they can die of a bacterial infection the following year. i would pop in tank of there own and pop a heater in set to around 16-18deg asa low temp failsafe , the ambient temps in summer should then take care of the summer temps, if the tank is in a room you useally use ,then i do not bother putting a heater in a all as the room is unlikley to drop below 16deg
