Channa ID

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
HI,

this is definitely not sp. Assam, and its not sp. himalaya.
It looks a bit like ornatipinnis (body and head shape, spots on cheeks)
I think its an undescribed species form the same region as ornatipinnis and pulchra come from.

There is still much to discover in Chanaland.

Cheers Brucki

Yes, there are pelvic fins. See this pic:

Thanks for your opinion, and it does have similarities with Ornatipinis except the absence of several dorsal spots that appear in Ornatipinis. It could be a variant, but I don't know it's origin, the lfs could not tell me where the fish came from.

For your information, it came in labeled at the lfs as "channa sp blue moon", not that it makes any sense, hence I omitted mentioning it when I posted those pics.

It was sold at more than 10 times the price of a bleheri or assam, and I didn't think it looked like either as I have kept both. I speculated Himalayas from the few pics available from the net, I myself have not kept channa stewarti sp Himalayas before and there is scant info on this fish, but it was a long shot, I agree!

I hope someone can id it positively, and at least I know what I am keeping.

Hi Spakase,

this is stewartii sp. himalaya:

i got mine last year..could've gotten a auranti, but i had a misunderstanding of channa labels with the LFS owner, auranti's go for like sing$24...

SGD24 for an auranti is pretty cheap...here in Kl standard price for auranti's is around rm80-85....damn i think in sg still offers good price even for PSP!ahha

Many thanks for your valuable input, gentlemen on the blue finned snakehead.

There is another snakehead I am hoping to get an ID on:
