channa pulchra

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my biggest is now 15mm and the smallest about 9mm
they look very nice all black with a golden stripe
that coloration will soon change

at what size ar they sexually mature?
can you give us all the specs on how you got them to breed?
temp.,ph etc.

mine are at 6 inches approx and i think there probably at the earliest size for breeding ,

to breed as with all channa it is important to start out with a group , i started with 7 but uli i belive started out with 4 or 5 , the important part is to let them choose there own mates from the group .

they are kept at ph7 but this is probably unimportant as with most channa , just avoid extreames . during the winter months ,where they come from snow and rain from the himalayas causes the streem they live to be fast flowing and the temp drop , to replicate this during winter months a seio pump was used to replacate the fast flowing water , they are kept at room temp and in winter that is approx 16 - 17deg , in the summer after the snow ect has all melted the streem dries up leaving pools of still water ,this is when they breed in the wild , to replacate this the pump should then be removed , again kept at room temp , the tank temp slowly raises as the outside temps start to rise to around 23deg ,at 23deg ther attitude changed and became more aggresive to each other within days a defanite pair had formed , once spawning had been whitnesed they other fish where removed from the tank , after disturbing them it took a few more days before they continued spawning again , this lasted around a week (rolling around near the surface) i then noticed eggs on the surface floating , you can clearly see the drop of oil in each egg to allow it to float , as the eggs floated around the tank the male would collect them in his mouth and expel them out of his gills in a certain spot , he continually done this then sat directly under them guarding them , within 4 days they have become free swimming and have just about absorbed there egg sacks .

the tank is set up with lots of floating plants and a fair few rocks and pieces of bog wood ,sand substrate and plants on the bottom , also many peices of 2" pvc pipe for them to hide in

i belive uli slowly raised his temp via heater slowly over a week or so to 23deg which triggered his to spawn (he managed to breed his a good month or two before mine , the pump in winter may or may not be needed ,but a cooling period followed by a slow warming period seams to be the trigger

hope this help someone ,and please excuse my terrible spelling

cheers col

ok.
thanks for the info.
then i dont think breeding will be possible for me.
its always around 30 degrees in my tank without a heater.

you just never know , ive heard a report this week of either pulchra or ornatipinis breeding at 27deg+ , allough its yet to be confirmed ,a freind of mine is going to vist the guy who is claiming it to see if its true or not , hey stranger things have happened .

but obviously the best bet would be with one of the tropical species

cheers col

considering your going to be set-up for tropical year round , i would go with parachanna africa, obscura or insignis , channa guchua , channa orientals , channa bankanensis , channa punctata ,Channa marulioides ,Channa melasoma ,Channa lucia really depending on the size of fish you want and the space you have , but all the above should be fine without heater where you are. the gachua are probably the most tolerant of higher temps and the easiest to breed ,but as they come from far and wide best trying to get some that where caught in tropical regions , personally for the smaller types i like bankanensis and orientals , iam sure which ever you choose you will be happy
