I finally picked up a baby channel cat and it is only 2-3 inches... It is in a 30 gallon with a severum that is it. No heater... Both didnt eat at first but now eat like PIGS! I know it is coldwater and i may eventually move the severum...
Here are some questions though:

1) how fast do they grow if fed tons and tons of water changes?

2) at what size should i upgrade his tank?

3) will he be able to live in my 300 with my knifefish and others in the long run despite being coldwater?

(I know he will need much bigger then a 300 in the long run if i keep him properly...)

I hope he grows fast quick :)

Thanks for helping guys!

I had a channel cat for about a year and a half, I got him at the same you did. He grew to be about 13" before I have him to my cousin to put in his 125. He should be fine in your 300, despite being cold water. What temp do you keep the tank?

Well if he grows 3-4 feet like people tell me a 300 is to small but around a foot a year is good. Inch or so a month give or take...

I doubt he'll get 4 feet in an aquarium. 2-2.5' is more realistic from what I read, so I think a 300 would be fine. I'd love to get something like that once I have the space and the money :D

+1. I actually got my channel cat at a lfs for only about $10, they're not that expensive at all. The only thing I'm concerned with is the tank temperature. He should live in any temp, they're quite hardy, but I feel like they might be more stressed or aggressive if the tank is 80+ degrees.

Mine was $3.99 pretty much nothing. Any fish that will provide years of entertainment is easily worth $100. And the tanks are around 76-79during the day and 72-75 at night...

My neighbor had a channel cat in his big cichlid tank and it actually ran the tank. He ended up tossing is outside into his turtle pond because of how aggressive it was.

That's a perfect temp. I think you're set for a channel cat. Just be careful with aggression, although a 300 should have enough space to eliminate most aggression, other than for predatory instincts.

The 30 gallon won't last too long, depending on what you feed him and how often. Your temps are fine, but it'll grow a little slower as a result. I'd estimate within 3 or so months you'll be looking to upgrade. Watch out for that severum as it gets bigger, catfish are little piggies. It's not uncommon for me to catch a small channel on a large liver or baitfish.
