Hey, thinking of setting up a 180 gallon tank this summer and I want some gars.
Was thinking of getting 2xflorida's.
Now, I've got an albino channel cat I'm growing out for a pond it's about 7''
Would it be ok with the gars for a while until it grows too large for the 180 and is then moved to a pond?
Thanks.
:)

channel cats can have variable growth rates, and will eventually surpass the Florida/spotted gars if they are on a steady diet/proper care. the combo could work for a while, but the cat would likely outgrow the gars before it outgrew the 180g, therefore causing some problems for the gars in case it chose to attack/harass one of them. again, the combo would work for a while, i would just keep a close eye on the fishes and separate them when necessary--

Ok cool.
It wont be in the 180 for very long.
Might only be in there for a few weeks and then moved into a friends pond.

Would a Lima shovelnose work well with the Gar's? I just want something nice for the bottom of the tank as the gars will ber in the top/mid.

gars will often rest on the bottom of the tank, so they will actually be all over the water column. IME, gars have chosen to attempt to eat Lima shovelnoses of the same size...and if you got a lima larger than the gars, you may find the opposite occurring, so i wouldn't suggest that combo given my experience, but that's all i have to go on for that.

a good tankmate for gars would be polypterus spp, they will generally be on the bottom, and often times the gars and bichirs congregate together. there are some others that work, but in terms of a more or less benthic fish, i would go with bichirs--

Thanks for the info!
I've never kept gar's before but would really like to try one or two out.

Another question, would an African Bonytongue be a sufficient tankmate for two florida gar?

i think they would get along okay, xander13 keeps one with his spotted pair and cuban, he might be able to give you first hand info.

I went to E_americanus' site and read up on the african bony tongues.

It seems like it would be my best best to get one at about 8-10''.
Read that most do well on frozen bloodworms and the like.
I'm wondering if they would accept tubifex worm cubes?
