Channel cat???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
in the very near future I am making a larger pond to replace mine. I am also going to make a custom aquarium to house smaller species of pimelodid catfish. Some members have been helping me come up with some ideas for both of them. Eventually when I have a place of my own I am going to build a very large indoor aqaurium and an very, very large heated outdoor wooden aquarium with glass pannels of course! This will have a built in wet dry sump filter and a purge valve underneath a grate at the bottom to automatically flush waste from the bottom. I would like to make it 5-10k gal., and house some of the world's largest catfish. Also thought of a building on my property with growout tanks and single species tanks to maximize the number of species to be kept at one time! Where's the money for all this gonna come from you ask? That's for me to know and tell you all about after it happens! You are around the age I was when I was able to start keeping catfish. I started out with a rtc against my better judgement. I didn't know much about keeping fish, and he ended up dying after 2 years at 28". I had kept him in a 125 gal. Way too small for him. He ended up being alone because he killed all fish that were in the tank with him, even larger ones. He would ram them repeatedly. I was a victim of feeding feeder goldfish, and he became very sick with fin and tail rot and died. I spent hundreds of dollars in medications for him. Now I know better, and I hope that I can help other members keep their catfish healthy and happy in a proper environment for a long time! What are your future fishkeeping dreams?

May plans keep changing. Wat i want to get fisrt is a bigger tank for inside and sum monsters. then I want to build i nice indoor pond. Maybe set up a wall tank the parates 2 rooms. Then make a Big out door pond to keep sum big cats and Bass. Probly keep natvies outside so i dont have to heat it and keep bigger cats and fish that need warmer waters inside. I would love to get a Ray pond but that will be kinda hard cuz i will have to smuggle them in or find places that sell them. I was gana venture into salt water i still may cuz i have a 10g set up thats is doing great but i prefer frsh for now cuz its alot cheaper.

I agree with the SW. I am planning on setting up a brackish tank in the future for some of the SW and brackish catfish. It would probably be a larger tank custom made also. My problem with aqauriums is that they are made for more ornamental fish than they are for catfish. That's why custom aquariums would be much better for them. I still need to price materials for these endevors though. I once sat down and priced all the materials that I would need to build a 50,000 gal heated outdoor pond with an underground cellar with viewing window. The costs for materials was around 6-8,000 dollars, and that was going cheapo on it. I would have to do all the labor myself for it and that price does not cover the costs of renting heavy equipment I would need to use(either that or digging a giant hole by hand!). Dream big, but plan smart. Start figuring out the prices for your future plans now so that you can save accordingly! I probably need to add in the cost of inflation also. I would say double the price listed above for the price of materials when I will actually be able to realize my dreams!

Yah. Thats thr problem with dreaming big. It cost ALOT of money. And like u said its costs alot for just the materials then u have to rent equipment or hire sum1 to dig it for u...or buy alot of beer for your friends :naughty: Maybe u could open a catfish aquarium and hire sum memebers that know their cats to be the guides :) I would love to see a solid Freshwater Aquarium. Saltwater maybe prettier but i find fresh water speacis very intresting. Oh i would love to see a tank with all the huge cats. Maybe u could do sumthing like "Amazon Tank" and have only fish from the amazon in there like a natural enviroment with all the fish breeding and and seeing others get eaten and then u wouldnt have to feed them ;)

I think that you would still have to feed something in order to sustain a viable population of fish for them to eat. I would love to open an aquarium for something like that, but money is the main factor. If I succede in my future plans, then who knows what will happen. I like the idea of a fresh water aquarium, but I think it would be more about location than anything. maybe we could offer dive sessions with the catfish for money! lol

Let's start a fresh water aquarium donation program right here on MFK! lol, dreams......

I wil love to dive with cats and other fish and im sure other would. Lets start the donations right now. I donate the change in my pocket....uhhh that makes it 87cents :) any1 else want to chip in. if u do ill give u a free season pass to the aqquarium.
