Channel Catfish Growout Thread!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This cat commonly grows from ~3" to ~1.5' in one year.

...Will him not eating very often effect his growth potential long term?
I'd not think so.

What do you guys think the minimum tank size for one of these is, as it is my absolute, top, number 1 catfish and I would like to set up my next large tank in a few years to be able to accommodate one as well as some other cats and cichlids. I've heard everything from 180 to 600! Who the heck is correct?

?? It's not a Doradiid :)

Channels hit roughly 2' in 1.5-2 years and 2.5' in 2-3 years, and 3' in ~5 years and may reach 3.5' in 10+ years.

I follow the 4Lx2L (for sedentary cats) or 6Lx3L (for swimming cats) minimum footprint rule of thumb.

I wasn't referring to my 75! I meant when I get a 180+ in a few years. I definitely wouldn't chance growing one out in a 75 for THAT long. I thought all adults level out at about 2"?

:) There is nothing implied, except for a jab about your favorite cat family and your favorite cat :)

I am not talking about any particular tank, yours or not. I was trying to answer the question in a general form. Surely, you can make your own decisions or deductions :) No? What's confusing?

This is the question you stated, no?

Well I made a list of my favorite cats: irwini was either 3 or 4 and channel was 1 or 2 I believe.
yes that was my original question, I'll assume anywhere in that range depending on the specific fish.

I had an albino channel catfish who grew super fast. I bought him as an "albino catfish" so I had no idea how fast he'd grow or how big he'd get. Long stor short he outgrew my 120 and was given to my friend who has an indoor koy pond.
