my friend has a characin coomm in a 5x2x2 tank, the fish are mostly 2 yrs old.

gatf-12"
vatf-12"
armatusx2-12"
crystal tetrax2-10"?
tatauia-8"

okay here's what happened.
-bad batch of feeders, all died with cloudy eyes
-did water change
-3 weeks no feeding, no casulties
-then out of no where, all the tetras skin start flaking at the head, gills n tail
-then last week the 2 crystals died
-3 days ago one armatus(the smaller one) died
-recently the tat died
-last armatus looks to be in bad shape.
-just did 80% WC, ammonia is 0
-ATF's are fine.

anyone know what's going on?
Your water parameter results are inadequate. What test kit are you using? Retest ammonia and include nitrites and nitrates this time. Use API liquid test kit for accurate results. Test strips are grossly inaccurate.

Did you quarantine the feeders, Xander? Which fish in this phrase '-3 weeks no feeding, no casualties' were you referring to? Feeders or characins?

Your second post is still inadequate.

You've been asked the following questions.
1. Is there substrate in your tank?
2. What is your tank maintenance regimen?
3. What filters are you using?
4. What is the temperature?
5. Most importantly, what test kit did you use?

Is Nitrite 0 too? NOT Nitrate....that's irrelevant right now.
Both are relevant. How are they not relevant?

Say Nitrate is 400ppm. What are you going to do? The same thing you're allready doing........waterchanges. If you are doing them daily you are bringing that number down. Please inform me why this number would mean anything at a time of crisis?????

My point is the OP only posted ammonia. No tank maintenance regimen was included which is why nitrates is relevant here. What if there was an old tank syndrome? Assuming nitrates is over 100 ppm and the OP did a large water change, obviously the fish will be shocked by the sudden change in the water conditions and eventually die. Sudden changes in environment can result in body damage and very poor immune system.

Regardless of the circumstances, nitrates is still relevant.

Nitrates may be relevant to people that procrastinate maintainance enough to let levels get that high and then for some unknown reason have a drastic change of heart and decide that they would like to keep thier fish in better condition then decide they will do 80% WCs till the level is down to say 30-40.........

I understand that.

BUT, IF the guy has a collection of fish that are worth even HALF what this person's was I HIGHLY doubt that this is the case. I don't know many Armatus owners that would just "let thier tank go" like the example you have given.

If you can show me one person that keeps expensive fish such as Armatus that is worried about Nitrate then I'll be quiet.

Most people don't ignore waterchanges then just decide to start doing them enough to shock the fish.

Do you understand where I'm coming from?

it's not my tank. anyway thanks lots for the help, the armatus are gone but the tigers seem to be fine. he's overseas at the moment and i cant contact him. thanks once again for the help guys:)
