lets try this again :grinno:
bigspizz killed my last thread, thanks it was messed up anyways :D

so do you like to grill with charcoal or propane?

i only use propane

few days ago i was FORCED to use a charcoal grill :grinno:
hard to keep going :irked:
tasted like charcoal and lighter fluid "was the self lighting" :irked:
but ya :yuck: <--- was my face as i ate my steak
:D

I agree, I would use a propane grill over "self lighting" charcoal any day. That stuff tastes like kerosene something terrible.

I use lump charcoal when I have it, or briquets if that's all I've got.

A chimney like the one Bigspizz posted speeds up the process a lot. Plus, no stinky, bad-tasting lighter fluid.

I'm pretty sure this thread isn't going to change anyone's mind about what's best.

I think we all can agree that food grilled outside over fire is a good thing, no matter how you look at it! :headbang2

Charcoal is the only way to fly. If you are in such a hury that Charcoal takes to long, you shouldn't be cooking outside to begin with. Charcoal all the way for me. I have 2 BBQ's and 3 smokers. Had a gas bbq once. Ended up ripping out the guts and linning it in tin foil and, filling it with charcoal.
its not even about the speed its about the taste
i season and marinade my steaks
i want to taste that not some old burnt up coal taste
:D

Sorry Midnight, I know it's your poll, but look at the numbers.:irked:

Propane wins for speed and convenience, but you would NEVER see a propane grill at a BBQ competition. I wonder why...

I'm not quite as vehement on the subject as Rallysman, but since I gave up propane 10 years ago I've never looked back.

Hmmmm, ribs  (said in a Homer Simpsons voice)

ya poll isnt going for propane but i was just curious what people used

like you said this thread isnt going to change anyone
i still think charcoal tastes like @$$,hard to keep lit and so on
propane burns perfect, leaves no bad after taste, and isnt a joke to light and keep lit

and i couldnt imagine trying to keep coals going long enough for ribs!!forget that
:nilly:

propane gives you great tasting food, charcoal give you cancer
here kids would you like a cancerburger or a cancerdog?

might as well just pile up some fire wood
light it
then just slap your meat right on the burning wood
caveman style,mmmm

ok i will stop,for now

I only have propane grill right now, but charcoal is superior. It is the only thing used at legitimate competitions. I have had both bad propane and bad charcoal meals, but the best grilling I have ever had was charcoal.

I'll take a good BBQ over grilling any day.

All you need is firewood, rebar, and meat!

for me the entire greatness of bbq is kicking back by the fire and the food as long as possible.Good drink, maybe a cigar, some classic rock.Dog beggin for little bites of whats cookin. Some of my family is from Santa Maria CA and SLO so its been in my blood all my life.We normally use crank down fire pits with red oak.The wood smells good enough to eat. After a day of hiking, surfing or whatever, even just cycling here in my town I cant think of anything better than what I said above.I have a few family members that just ***** about it taking a while to cook. Its usualy because Ive scooted the meat off the fire just so I can enjoy it longer.Im not sure what planet they are from, order a pizza or grab a beer kick back and enjoy life a bit,you wont starve. To answer your question in the way it was asked though I pic charcoal over propane.Only way I would use propane is if Im pressed for time and just insist on fire cooked meat, lol. These pics aren't ours.BBQ_Bread.jpg

i use both... i prefer charcoal but after a 10 hour day a steak on propane jane is damn good and ready in 10 min.... my cabinet smoker is all i have left and havent used it in awhile but prefect for ribs... i need to buy or make a new large smoker this year for pigs.... something about a big with hickory apple woods and 14 hours thats the greatest thing in the world...
