I agree with redtailfool, or you could emplace a cheesecloth bag of small lava rock. I have used charcoal when the wellwater where is was living contained a lot of sulfer or iron. I also used it in an apartment that had old copper pipes. Then I changed it every week. I usualy think it justs wastes money that I could be spending on hookers or drugs.
What did you use to act as the filter screen in place of the carbon slide? If I simply remove the carbon slide the only thing left would be the biological filter.
Any ideas on how I should set up my hang on type filters after I remove the charcoal slides?
I use the cut-to-fit filter pads (and media cartridges filled with peat):
Emperors are really convenient because they come with empty media containers, but you can make your own cartridges for any type of filter--just cut off the padding from an old filter cartridge, throw out the media and old pad, and use the plastic piece to hold your new pad in place. If you want to try your own media (like peat), just put it in a bag behind the filter cartridges.
