Chatuchak Bangkok - More fish than you can imagine

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just asking, do they have any turtles there like a fly river/pig nose

Yeah they have every kind of turtle and reptile you can imagine. I know there are more speciality fish shops around Bangkok for things like snakes and other reptiles. Those pig-nose turtles especially are everywhere.

That is a lots of money!!! got to work hard for my dream fish!! aha
BTW....do they have any sturgeon or paddlefish in Thailand as well!!..

They have both of those, I bought a paddlefish and it was trained on live ghost shrimp but I never bought a sturgeon because they just aren't that appealing to me.

Who buys all those fish that are bagged up? Are these whole sellers who then sell to exporters or are they one and the same? Does an exporter who wants to buy fish come and take them all individually bagged like that or are the ones in the bags for locals looking to stock their aquariums? In that case...to have a supply like that, they must have a huge demand...lots of locals with crazy fish in their crazy tanks?

Anyone can buy them so I don't know. I think a lot of people come and buy some of those shops out, the more speciality shops sell Arowanas and Black Diamond (other stingrays I have seen in those bags). There is a huge demand, a handful of places just within a couple blocks of me have arowana tanks set up in their windows.

You can't even imagine the kind of local fish tanks here. When I came here two years ago I was thinking "Oh I need to buy water conditioner" or "That simple media filter won't work" but I have been proved wrong time and time again at the simplicity of fish keeping (freshwater, not salt).

Seems to be quantity over quality with the fish at these markets. A lot of species with very few of them taken care of properly.

Not true whatsoever. Yes in some cases they aren't taken care of correctly but everyone does that time and time again. A lot of these fish are sold pretty quick too, many of the fish I see one week are gone the next.

I would say, 75% to 80% are taken care of correctly. Once saw 6 stingrays in a 40 gallon breeder with no airstone, it hurt seeing them breath so heavily and they didn't even swim, probably because there was very little oxygen.

damn and i thought they were illegal to have because they are endangered

Stingrays? I have one myself, and they are all bred in Asia (except for a couple) so they aren't harming the natural population of them.

I'm pretty sure there are quite a few ray owners on MFK (in the US) and tons more internationally. They are illegal for you and me to keep since we live in California. I don't think it is because they are endangered but because if released they would pose a risk to the native fish populations. Not 100% on my last statement, but I know people have them and we can't :irked:

They are considered an invasive species in a few states in which they could survive in the wild throughout the winter. Most rays come from South America but there are many breeders everywhere. Many Asian rays have been bred to be superb quality and out of most peoples price range.
(Thank you to whoever this pic came from! It has been in my phone awhile now lol)
