Agreed!

They'll need a densely planted tank with a multitude of rockword and wood for hidey holes(they dont like each other much) and Ornates are sub tropical I.E they'll need to get cold so the other fish will have to go...elsewhere.

thank you, i really needed the lecture... It was half an impulse buy seeing how many i got and the price i paid you really wouldn't blame me... and second an experiment, i knew 100% what the potential and probable outcome would be... my expectation was to maybe lose up to four in settling in fights as i figure once they all had a good go at each other establish a picking order things would quiten down... and to be fair, for now they have, all 12 are still alive, and for the time being there is peace, no tank mates have been lost so hopefully things stay this way for another two days and then they can be moved...

they are currently at 25 degrees C... the will be going into a 4'x2'x15" in a couple of days and yes the temp will slowly be brought down a few degrees...

I would be very interested to hear any accounts from members with ornatipinis coms, tank size, stocking levels ext...

hi nathan , they really are not suited to com , they are possably the most aggresive snakehead out there , i have tried theese fish with others and it has not worked , and they do really hate each other , they really need a hiding place for each fish with a fair distance between each hiding place , even in the wild where they are caught , there has never been two caught together allways only one , even the one that was caught carring eggs in its mouth (hence how we know they are mouth brooders) was caught on its own ,i know the price was a steel but that is for a good reason , the price for them now in cheap shops is around £20 , dan at tropical imports has just sold a load of them at £20 each iam sure this is also due to the fact that they are such a specialized fish that needs an extreamly large tank to themselves even though they are a dwarf species and a lot of people are put off by them , esp when the pulchra is at the same price but have allready been bred and is a much less aggresive fish ,

if it where me i would just keep the 12 in the new tank , set it up for sub-tropical with many hiding place and floating cover , put in large stream power head seio tunze ect ,for extra flow then in april next year turn it off , keep water changes to a minimum and who knows you could just be the first person to breed this species

good luck with them whatever you decide

cheers col

Thanks col! When i say com i meant multiple ornates not other fish! and oh yea hey were £100 for 10, hence y i got so many.... they definately are aggressive dont get me wrong but to be frank id say it was mild compared to what it was like introducing three 5" pulchra to each other... tesiment to which i only have two pulchra... but they are always at eac others sides....

ah i see , yep i know several people with groups of theese , and reports are all diferant , some mega aggresive some not so aggressive , mine where hyper aggresive , i think as long as you get your new tank set up well and allow for some casualties ,you will be fine . and for the price ,i dont think i would of walked away either lol

one of the things that does seam to keep them a bit calmer is the heavy flow , from now to april you need to mimic the snow and melting from the mountains which means where they are found the streams run fast , around april the snow has all melted and the sun comes out , so at that point make sure there is no movement on top of water add in a load of floating cover and let the tank temp rise with our summer , as where there found once the snow goes the streams dry up and leave pools , this it the time when they breed in nature so expect some major aggresion around that time , they havent been bred yet so that goal is still up for grabs

iam sure you will be fine mate

cheers col

ok kool, all noted and ill get it sorted, and yes i excepted when i purchased them a few casultys would probably be inevetable but its well worth a try!
