Cheap easy filtration...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What are you going to use for the pump's prefilter? The pump inlet clogs up really fast in an outside pond, especially in the sunlight.

UV is always worth it IMO. Yes it will control algae, but it will also destroy harmful microbes. Goodluck with your project keep us posted.

Let me disclaim that I'm not an expert by any means... but I think there is pretty heavy debate about whether UV is worthwhile on FW setups. My point I guess is that it'll require a pretty high wattage, short life bulb to keep up with the flow rate. maybe a sterilizer on a seperate circuit?

Is your filter going to be above ground? or water level? ex dig a hole put it in. hide it. My first pond filter was like yours... and after some time... i keep getting backwash into my pond from the filter... maybe i didnt pack it enough but the waste ended back into my pond The skimmer part works like this

Anymore more info? http://www.koi.com.my/index.html all my pond filter are bases around a user named Koi38.. Look him up under Filters and DIY... he a Koi master :)

Yeah it's going to be above ground, I was going to pack it as much as possible anyway. The three barrelled filter looks like alot of work(I dont like work;) lol).

No debate...they really work. Proven, repeatable fact.
 He hasn't told us the flow rate yet.

Bulbs last 6-8 months on average.

Well if you don't like work you picked the right filter :D.

Put the return bulkhead on the filter a few inches up from the bottom so to keep the sludge that builds up from going into the pond during cleaning as Bizzaro indicated.

Fill it with floor scrubbing pads whole or cut up, like these

http://www.parish-supply.com/floorpad.htm from janitorial supply stores.

If there is too much return flow for the UV, split the return and put a ball valve on one side before the UV to regulate the flow.

Take lots of pix and keep us posted.

Good idea I might do that.
Going to go to the pond place tomorrow and get some ideas!!!

Hey does BB grow on glass because I can get an unlimited amount of broken glass and use that as media?

I don't think I said they don't WORK, I said they might not be WORTH IT, that's all.

Regular broken glass won't do it.

Ground glass (small 1/4" pieces that look like they were sandblasted) (somebody was selling this a few years ago) can be used as bio-mediab but honestly lava rock would be better, the glass would just be easier to clean (unless you just thro the lava rock in the flower bed and buy new :D ).

Now if you want to get a cement mixer, broken glass and silica sand...you could try making your own...just have to run the mixer 24hrs a day for a week and monitor the water level every couple of hours :screwy:.
