those are good in smaller tanks but they have a bad restrike rate. its going to be a lot more work and money. once you hit that size of tank you should just go with t5 ho's you can get them cheap when comparing to what i think you are talking about in the spiral cfl bulbs.
Well thanks everyone for the advice! Funny coincidence today, I was just randomly browsing at Petco (I work at Petsmart) and I found a 24" Coralife deluxe compact fluorescent fixture. Originally 209.99, discounted to 185.99, then when I was talking with the aquatics manager she thought it was discounted more so she called the register and had them run the UPC - 20.00!!!!! So now my 29 gallon is set so I'll just work on a planted tank in there till I can get setup for my 55.

I've been browsin through all the planted tank threads on here tryin to get some advice on putting plants in my 72gal bowfront. this helps out a lot! one question....does the substrate need to be something special or do you just put the bulbs in gravel?
