Cheap plants, less nitrate! POTHOS

I would likely attribute that to evaporation, I'm sure some is from the plant, my tank losses about 1gal per day but the top is pretty much opened.

Cover your tank or sump.

I know I lose about a gallon a day with an open top also. The only thing I do different than you guys is growing edible plants in mine.
 
Great thread! Literally just got back from Walmart and they had pothos plants. Got a golden pothos and a marble queen pothos. Gonna put the golden in my 90 with my red devil and the marble queen in my daughters 29 gallon platy tank. The platy need some place to have their fry hide in and this will be perfect! Thanks for all the brilliant ideas on here everyone. Very Creative! Can't wait to drop these plants in!
