I have a 55 gallon cichlid tank with these square rocks from home depot to make caves and such.

I want something new to the tank for the cichlids and was wondering for cheap alternative besides the dull rocks that i have. any rocks that you can stack and create an awesome environment for my fishes will be great:grinno::grinno:

and this is my first time posting something on MFK haha... any suggestion is appreciated! Thanks:D

Try and pay attention to your surroundings when you're out and about. Its unbelievable how often you see rocks that would work great for an aquarium. Many landscaping rocks at plant nurseries are great as well. Post a pic of what you're using now, I'm curious.

Go check out your local rock yards

i go to swap meets, they have ornamental rocks and driftwoods for like 3-4 bucks, which is what it should be. screw paying 40 dollars for lace rock!!

not cheap at all, but try searching cichlid stones on ebay or forsters n smith... the small ones are REALLY small, only good for fry, and the large ones are 10 bucks each. its expensive but its stackable and beautiful :)

YES thank you for the suggestion. i just found a local stone supplier 5 minutes from my house. ill check that out this weekend! the power of google maps :D :D

Don't buy from your lfs as they charge a stupid amount for the same rock you could get 10 times cheaper from your local garden centre if you know what your looking for. Take a bottle of vinegar and look for fizzing not long after you apply the vinegar to the rock, avoid rocks with a rusty colour running through them and if you can crumble the rock with your fingers then it is a big warning sign.

I just walk along whatever creek/river i'm near and pick out interesting rocks. A quick trip to the car wash to rinse them in the high pressure sprayer and into the tank they go :)
