Cheap sump?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i used a rubbermaid bin for my original sump. stupid manufacturer's made it with holes 1/3 of the way from the top for air circulation which caused not only power outages to leak onto my basement floor, but condensation from the lid would drip through said holes. i constantly had water on my floor from it. without those holes, it would have held all the excess tank water during an outage. i constructed a wood frame to keep it from bowing out. pain in the arse, so i use a 90gal tank now. no problems any more.

a 2nd hand tank is sooooo cheap why not just buy a 2nd hand tank and made your own sump

Most of the 2nd hand tanks I could find where tempered glass that couldn't be drilled for an external pump and I am very impatient

Also the 100 gallon rubbermaid was a little over 100 bucks. You won't find too many big tanks for a dollar a gallon or less

I have a 100 gallon truck bed tool chest that I used for a sump. Works great and much more stable than a typical rubbermaid. The tough stuff containers work great and they go up to 300 gallons.

I lucked out and found a used 95 gallon wide tank for $20 and converted it into a sump myself. Even if u find a cheap used tank in the end It still cost me near $200 to make even DIY. The cost included custom cut glass for baffles, drilling, bulkhead, egg crate and drip tray, silicone and razor blades etc. This cost doesn't include bio/mech media and return pump. IMO using a rubbermaid with a plastic drawer setup as a sump will be a lot cheaper then making a glass tank sump. Less work with the rubbermaid too.

filtration is the kidney of your tank why spend big money on fish and a tank only to cut costs on one of the most important parts

wont that rubbermaid thing also be harder to make sections in and lose heat much faster than a glass or acrylic tank i dont know just asking

I think it insulates just fine, it is difficult to baffle I wouldn't count on the baffles holding water. I decided to use one because it made a lot more sense to me, if I had thought a glass tank would have worked better I would have bought one. My rubbermaid has ran great and I have had pristine water running a 4300 gph pump on it with filter socks and scrubbies
