I'm all for doing things on the cheap, but i would be wary of using the cheap plastic tubs for 2 reasons:
1. the plastic used to make these IME tends to get brittle over time especially when exposed to sunlight.
2. many of these containers aren't "fish safe" meaning they can leach harmful chemicals into the water in turn killing your fish.

Not trying to be a downer, but a couple things to think about. Good luck:)

Don't know about the tub. I'd try it for a month or two with some cheep fish to see if any unexpected problems turn up. Every time I start thinking about cheep tank alternatives I read through the indoor pond sticky, think back to when I made a fountain pool in my backyard out of that black rubber stuff for about 40 bucks, then look at an unused corner of my room. Its a bad, bad train of thought that I prefer to avoid.

the fish have be in this tub about a year and i only loss guppys , but they were old. i will buy a tank in august so it is temporary.

Hi. I do this a lot. As long as the tub has a food safe logoe on the base, it is ok. Did you see me in the pfk june issue a few years ago. It talks about one of my old molly setups which was just a plastic tub and diy filter.

I had a 40 gallon horse water trough made out of rubber I wasn't useing anymore.. story short I dug a hole in my yard and dropped it in. ghetto outdoor pond! food safe bins... hrmm.. maybe i will get back into breeding guppies on a larger scale for feeders....
