Any plastic media still works fine underwater. Scrubbies are fine, but depending on the price you can get other stuff cheaper by volume. Pond filter media, for example, is around $50 per cubic foot, depending on the brand. For example, this stuff apparently has 750 sq feet of surface area per cubic foot and is a similar price. http://aquauvsale.com/filtermedia.htm
