Cheapest way to make saltwater

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Around here (Oregon), a 50 gallon bag (makes 50 gallons of SW) cost from $17-$30. I don't usually buy +150 gallon buckets because you get like 10 gallons more for the price here.

That is a bit high IMO, but $17 for 50 gallons isn't too bad.

Don't know if it is logical or not but I decided to stick with one brand, thinking it would avoid the fish having to adjust to different formulations of chemicals used to makes the salt mixture.

Not a good idea.

Around the shore the water quality could possibly be quite poor. Also, you are risking introducing all sorts of parasites and disease. Just not worth it.

Not to mention how heavy water is and how little fun it is to haul places.

sarcasm... i moved half the water of my 75 gallon with 5 gallon buckets... lol not fun at all

Instant ocean in bulk is less than $0.27. If you cant afford the salt, the rest of the marine side of the hobby wont be for you either.

That being said, some people make their own (I would not trust this with valuable invertebrates). Plus you have issues with consistency and a whole lot of other things.

20g water change every week works out to less than a dollar a day over a year.

Definitely agree in that the hobby isn't for you if you are looking to save money on salt.

Chaz, I agree with you, but I can see it both ways kinda. Buying one brand(also what I do) does create stability. I can also see using different brands, which would provide different elements that may be lacking in one brand. This is just kind of a random thought, but seems like it would make sense. I am going to stick with the stability though, really its what we are striving for, for the most part.
