Has anyone ever had one of those cheapo metal stands fail? They seem really unstable, the tank almost shakes if you bump into it.

Ive had several warp because of putting it on an uneven surface. The tank would fail first, and ive never had a metal stand break or snap on me.

THe regular angle iron stand is pretty tough, I have notived that the "scroll" type metal stands can move around a little. It's really important that you have all 4 feet supported level so the tank has even support on all 4 corners. If one of the feet is high or low it can put the tank in a bit of a "twist" that can lead to failure or breakage. I use a 4' level on the stand and shim where needed. I also don't trust the stand itself to be level so onec I put the tank on the stand, I use the level again and shim the tank on the stand as needed.

I also have never had an iron stand fail. THey rust real bad over time though, espcially on saltwater tanks.

My metal stand has a 130 and 120 on there no probs so far. But I can pull my stand forward with no effort so be careful with them around children that like to climb. ;)

Ive never trusted metal stands Simply for the fact that they really can be unstable an easily knocked over. you can make a metal stand thats more stable pretty easily.

I had a metal stand with my first fish tank and it worked fine, but then again that tank was only a 29g.

I have always used homebuilt stands of 4"x4" and 2"x6" with 1/2" plywood sheathing. I am a bit paranoid about stand failure after seeing what happened to a couple friends who had 55gs, one tried using metal shelving and had a leg buckled when the tank got bumpes, the other lost her tank after the particle board stand fell apart from getting wet by standing in a puddle all night.

Everyone one of my wooden stands sags in the center and seem rocky my metal stands dont sag and seem much more stable i'm currently shoping for a metal stand to replace my 90 wooden stand.......

Is it particle board or pine? I've never seen a hardwood stand sag ever.

My homebuilts don't sag but I use center posts (4x4). I am better with a saw and drill then with a welding torch.
