so there is a little fh in her?

A FH is a mix of cichlids to achieve a desired effect, not a species.

We used to call the ones like yours low grade FH's but I guess now their just considered a Trimac x whatever it is mixed with. From what I've heard, they make excellent pets. But you wouldn't want to breed her with a male Trimac and sell the offspring as Trimac.

ok, so a flowerhorn is 2 diff american cichlids bred together? so in this case this fish woudl be a lowgrade fh becuase its parents were 2 diff cichlids, one of them being a trimac and the other not necessarily being a strain of fh? and i knew that fh werent a species, they were a a hybrid of some sort. but i just thought there were only certian strains of fh.

A flowerhorn can be any number of species. Id consider this fish a FH just far from show quality. Dont get me wrong she is gorgeous, but comparing trimac to FH just isnt fair. Trimacs are naturally gorgeous. FH is a desired effect because of their abnormal kok and brute bodies and neon colors. Certain "types" of fh have been deemed names throughout the years, like kamfa, zz, faders all have a certain look. There is some sort of secret recipe out there in making these guys.
If you plan to breed, Pair he with a FH. Bc, i highly doubt its a pure trimac

Yes, it's a very good possability it's not 100% Trimac. But it is a very nice looking fish so I wouldn't worry too much about it. As far as spending $30 for it, if you got a fish you really like it's a good price. She is a looker.

i like your avator. and i how this fish came about is we went to the lfs and my 1 yr old daughter kept pointin to it. so it caught my eye too and wanted to get it. so i did a little research on fh and bought it because thats what it was labeled as. regardless of the species i like it and i may try to breed it with something. Any suggestions?

Thank you for the complement that guy is closing in on a foot long now.

If you want to breed her since she is of unknown lineage you could choose any of the Amphilophus or one of the FH straines. I would make sure it is known up front the offspring are Hyrids. The male you choose will need to be larger than she is because she will be able to inflict some damage if he isn't up to the task. I would wait and grow her out some more and if you still want to breed her search out a suitable mate down the road. I don't know where in the "USA" you are but if you were near me I'd give you all the Trimacs you want. It kills me to use them as feeders I cringe every time I do it. Such a waste, what else can you do with 400 Trimacs a month.

Definently a nice fish, hybrids are great pets too.

I feel the same way about my Midas.
