I have noticed when raising fry that the most dominate fish in a group will start to color up really quickly. If you move that one it will be replaced by the next dominate fish. This will happen when the fish are very small. I have seen fish start to get some shades of color as small as 3/4 inch, not full color mind you, but some red starting to show.

Coloring up can mean many things, with mine the deep red was a possible spawning color

below was a non-spawning color, but with different genders in the tank
and without a male in a tank, colors could even less bright

Can I ask where you got the fish? I've got one same size, same great coloration already. Wild caught from Jeff Rapps

They originally came from Peter Durkin (Pleco Pete), I believe he's located in Michigan.
He goes to many of the swap meets and auctions around the midwest, I order from him thru the gcca.net classifieds where he posts for an upcoming event, and meet him in Chicago.
I believe the festae he had at the time were 6 juvies for $20, give or take.

In your first pic that female, Does she have any black stripes? I dont belive I have ever seen one with so much red over their whole body like that. Very cool
