Astyanax maxicanus ................ I thought that was a Mexian Blind Cavefish
Depending on who you talk to, Astyanax maxicanus or the Mexican Tetra and the blind cave version are one in the same. I have read some literature that list them as two separate subspps. scientifically speaking, there are lots of things that make them an interesting spps. Monster fish speaking, they are very cool because they have lots of razor sharp (albeit small) teeth and can decimate much larger prey in much the same way Piranha do by ganging up on their victim and ripping it to shreads :headbang2 You want piranha but can't because they're illegal...well Astyanax maxicanus may be the fish for you :)

Unless you live in California :grinno:

OH Yeah!!??!
Well we got the "Eastside" out here, and we are up to 22 Redrum for the year already...:screwy: :nilly:  :headbang2

I had no idea Mexican tetras had such killer teeth. I'd love to get my hands on a group of these some day.

Astyanax mexicanus (cool tetra on first page) and astyanax fasciatus mexicanus (albino handicapped brother of cool tetra on first page) are BOTH legal here in hawaii. so i doubt their illegal in california.

unfortunately they are so closely named that all you end up with while searching for them at any LFS will be a man pointing you to the blind cave tetras... and you don't need me to tell you they won't be ripping NOTHING to shreads as they are blind and that makes them about as good as a goldfish since they just bump walls all day...

can you imagine buying a blind rhom? all show, no go... :(.
very frustrating indeed.

i do want to buy a blind cave tetra though... just to reveal its teeth and take a macro shot like that for all of you to see and verify that they are the same species parted only by mutation.

would you rather stick you finger in the mouth of a full grown piranha or pacu?

Depends on if you wanna break your fingers or get them chopped off.
