Check out THESE jumbo jags

Perspective is talpia species are being sold in restuarants. Trout & salmon are not really shiped to the 3rd world countries. Bottom line it is like Bass are considered as pets in other countries but since the originate in the U.S. we look at them as food. Many fish are eaten in their native lands but considered pets in nonnative lands.

Dang, whenever I see a jag cooked, it makes me die a little more inside . . . lol, jk, not that dramatic. But jags are my favorite cichlid. :( Miss my little one that I was raising before I had to sell it to a better home. :( My tank was too small at the time.

I know they are fish and probably tasty, but it seems like such a waste when I would love to house some of those beasts in my aquariums!
especially since they are from hondorus(really blue jags)

The other fish are Black Belts.

I spoke to Eddie yesterday. He said that hands down...the Managuense were the tastiest fish he has EVER eaten.

I have yet to see a thread where Oscars are being fried up.

They dont look tasty to me, but that could be because they dont look done yet. I like when they are nice and crispy.

Wish i could go fishing and catch the stock for my tank.

Aren't they a staple diet for people living in their indigenous habitat? (That's a genuine question, BTW.)

In some places in Florida you can catch oscars because of all the releases. Apparently they make good eating. I've never tried any though. And sometimes if a potential pet is being cooked you just have to realize it's already dead and you shouldn't waste it by not eating it.

you ara correct. same with alot of fish we keep. in malawi the locals roast cichlids on sticks as a treat. can you just imagine a kenyi or yellow lab roasted for lunch?! no wonder they charge these crazy prices for one fish lol

We ate Oscars in Panama. They are yummy. Not as good as the Peacock Bass...but finger licking good with a mustard cornmeal coating.

Here's my thread on the trip with more pics and the fish before cooking, Actually the big managuense were some of the best fish I've ever eaten. Also it's impossible to keep large fish alive and bring them back, you take pictures and release them or eat them and bring back the fry. These were no where near as colorful as the blue jags we caught around La Ceiba the two previous trips that Mo and I are breeding. But the gold jags from the other river were very nice, wish some of them had made it back. We were in the jungle to long and lost most of the fish we collected, too hot and bad water. We will plan better next year. Ken
