  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
With nice tank quality and healthy lifestyle a solid 10 years my female is currently 6 years old and still going but she's slowed down a bit so I don't think she'll pass 8 years

We'll, he's in a meticulously cared for 180 gallon where he's the boss. I'm hoping for a long life.

She's beautiful! You should get some gorgeous offspring from them.. Although if you have the tank room, I'm sure he wouldn't mind another lady :p There's plenty of him to go around ;)

Does he have a name?
So his name is very fitting. :D it'd be heaven to keep such a magnificent creature. :)
lol Is there something you'd like to tell us? I can read smilie faces , you know. :p

How long can they live?
15-20 years if death is "natural causes" U can make it longer by keeping them at lower tempts...72-74F...slower metabolism, slower growth rate, slower ageing

Okay, you got me... I'm in LOVE with this big guy! I like big fish, and I like JD's, so when I come across something like this, I get a bit excited... Just imagine how my poor hubby feels, I haven't shut up about how awesome this guy is for days. LOL!

really? low temps can prolong life span? I'm tempted to tag one of the pros. Ive never heard that before.

This is true for goldfish. If kept at tropical temperatures (23°c+) they grow phenomenally quick, but only live for 7-10 years or so, but when kept at cooler temperatures (at or below 22°c) they grow much slower, and live to exceeded 15-20 years. I'm not sure if it would apply to all fish (or if it would be healthy for them) but it's true for goldfish. :)

Why wouldn't it if it slows down metabolism? I keep any fish younger than a year at 78-80F, as soon as they hit a year or a good size, I drop it down to 74-75F. It also makes them less voracious feeders, less aggressive and easier to maintain water quality

I know about the other stuff. I didn't know there was any kind of relation between low temps and life span though. Well, within reason.
I'm gonna do some reading on this next time I have time. That's really interesting. Unfortunately for my fish, in the summer my tanks don't need heaters and hit 84 degrees pretty often.

I've heard anecdotally, that higher temps speed up the metabolism; attributing to fish in Thailand etc being grown exceptionally quickly for breeding purposes, selling etc.

I haven't had any experiences myself to back this up, so can't say either way. Have also heard what Frank is suggesting, that by keeping fish in their lower ranges, it extends their life span a bit...
