i hate when that happens! last time it happened to me i used the blatter in my camel back! haha and i dont think you would get in trouble for catching and releasing a fish that is already there
 
Not sure on the specific laws but I think it is illegal to catch an invasive and then release it. Now, would you get in trouble for it? Doubt it. I do it all the time with bass at my local lake, but yeah you probably should have banked it to avoid the possibility of what happened to Florida.
