I believe they actually have rather weak jaws and feed by violently sucking in prey. I'm not sure whether they would try to bite as a defense or not though-or how bad of a bite it would be...

i heard that it is bad for matas to "chew" their food so you have to feed them food that they can swallow whole....

there are two matas at a lfs in phx $300 for one or both for $500 i was watching them and one kept biting his own leg

The one in the first vid is slightly larger than my old female was ( regrettably dead )...

Apart from when they're eating - and yes, they should be fed small morsels of food -it is quite an uninteresting turtle to have....
