I was at one of the LFS the other day and saw this poor guy in this state...

When i pointed the overturned gills she was like they are normal!!!... i certainly disagreed... i had seen this guy say 2months prior to this clean water state... guess what the tank was in the terrace and was green with algae... at the time couldn't get better look at him...

so my assumption is green water = less oxygen... resulting in this....? any comments?

kinda off topic but is gill curl bad for the fish's health, i mean it WAS bad that caused it but once it happens is it detrimental to your fish's health?

this is called gill curl. it is from the fish constantly trying to turn around in a tank that is way too small, resulting in the outer section of the gill curling outword.

oh :( bummer, my cat has it on his left side. he seems fine tho.

it is strange because everything i have read about gill curl says that it is from the tank being to small yet i have seen rtc git it in tanks that were a good size for the size of the fish and in only a few weeks of being in the tank. could water quality and o2 lvls also play a part in this as well as maybe stress lvls of the fish ?the one i saw it happen to was a 8" platinum in a 150

Hey kevin,

The tank I saw him in was I'm guessing 48"X24"X24" so for a size of 11" RTC I think he is fine in that tank for now ofcourse.... So the cramped place thing is not what it is I blv correct me if I am wrong... Wouldn't the algae cause this?

If its curable I might as well take a chance and give this guy a better home when I get my pond done for my RTC provided the LFS is reasonable in the asking price...
