Check this RTC :(

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah there is a big rtc at my lfs that has really bad gill curl too its too bad i wish i had a huge pond so i could help them out

I feel ya... i was a potential buyer for this guy few months ago... but then couldnt have a better look at him cause of the algae and the asking price was over ma budget since he had already grown.... but lookin at him at this state i hope i can do something for this guy.... planning on the indoor pong for my Giant Gauramy and 4 pacus in the garage... so might as well make some room for him...

Gill curl is mostly caused by poor tank conditions, ie build up of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate etc. A small tank with an RTC is allways going to have spikes of ammonia as the cat processes its meals and without very good filtration and water changes pollution will occur leading to gill curl. These fish really require a minimum 12 foot by 4 foot tank as adults and loads of upgrades if growing from juvenile and rehousing as you go. Cant comment on the merits of surgery or other mechanical means of repairing gill curl, but MILD cases can be reversed with a change to perfect water conditions and then maintained in perfect conditions. This fish has severe gill curl and I would say it's health has been compromised for life. IMHO.

Cheers,
Ken.
