So yesterday I changed water as I always do, unplugging my heater as I normally do since it's mounted vertically and I don't want to leave it uncovered...

Water change compleated, glass cleaned and with everything looking good, I say good night to my fish and go to bed....

This morning I check up on my fish and horror...!!
It has thrown up yesterday's pellets and is lying on the bottom, colors washed out, pretty much looking close to death...

I'm already thinking internal parasites, when I happen to glance at my thermometer....
15 degrees!!!!...usually it's 25!

I had forgot to plug in my heater after WC!
I'm an idiot!

Luckily, it looks like my ery is going to make it.
That's a lesson learned!

Why don't you just mount it horizontally? I have a certain percentage% of water I always take out of each tank, my heaters are always horizontally mounted about an inch below where the water level is after i'm finished taking the water out that I intended. I never even have to shut them off as a result.

Great advice.I also do this. This is the best way to mount your heater assuming it is totally submersible.

Yeah, mounting the heater horizontally makes perfect sense...
Don't know why I haven't done it...but I'll rectify that tomorrow!

Mounting it horizontally with a fish that would lie on top of it causes a completely different issue....

I turn off my entire tank during a WC, to keep my heaters from cracking or the filter running dry to avoid the risk. Currently in summer though all my tanks are unheated which helps

My heaters and filters are on a single power strip, so with a flick of a single switch, everything is turned off/on. Much easier to miss the heater being off than the filtration system.
