My cat did till I gave him wood. It's almost always a hide space issuenot if it has a guard on it
If his fish is lying on the heater, chances are good he needs more caves/hide-spaces

that's when you call the manufacturer and tell them you have a limited lifetime warrantee on them.........I keep everything on one power strip as well. Flip one switch and everything gets powered down.
I don't like fully submersing my heaters anymore. I find they last longer if you keep the dial-end out of the water at all times. Sure they're all advertised as being "fully submersible", but water will get in them eventually if you keep them fully under water.
This is exactly how I prevented this problem from happening to me again. I bought another power strip and plugged my heaters and filter into it so I could hear if my heaters were off.My heaters and filters are on a single power strip, so with a flick of a single switch, everything is turned off/on. Much easier to miss the heater being off than the filtration system.
With enough flow the water should be nicely mixed. I don't think it makes a differencemy understanding is hot water rises so mounting a heater horizontally at the bottom is best option to spread the hot water around?
LOL.That's just wrong
