I would never use chemicals in my tank - i only use melofix and or pimafix (natural treatment remedy) at a push - these are the only 2 things i know not to change the ppms of my water . .

My water stinks so I get mine straight from my grandfathers artesian well and put into big blue drinking water jugs.
The fish love it. Salt is good though.
I will seperate a fish into another tank and give it any meds necessary if salt is not working.

Prime, pimafix, melafix, and Quick cure for the new arrivals. Nothing has happen yet for me, all fish still alive.
