I got my C. destructor today but I think it's a female and I asked specifically for a male. Sorta irritating. I like it real well but wanted a male because their claws get bigger (I think). I left the picture pretty big.
Can anyone verify? Is this female? (Black Sun?)

Female, those spots (see arrows on attached image below) are the female organs.

Yep, that's what I thought. Well crud. I didn't really want 2 and I wanted a male. I guess the plus side is she won't outgrow the 30 g Long she's in, huh? I found BLUE Platys to put in there with her, too. Never knew they had blue Platys.

Ooo blue platys are so pretty, but I love any shiny fish like that. ^_^

I've got gold and blue Gouramis in with the quad, Tiger Barbs in with the big P.clarkii and Hatchets in with the peknyis and not one of those crays looks twice at any fish-amazing. The Gouramis swim in and out of the quad's claws taking bites of his food. Maybe the secret is stuffing them enough with food that they don't have any interest in eating fish, I don't know. I was excited about the blue Platys (haven't picked them up yet) because I wanted a blue fish to match the destructor. I'm getting more cray-wierd by the day :-)

female.

We should make a sticky on sexing inverts.

Also, very pretty cray you got there.

Otto, that'd be handy except the Cherax sp are sexed different than the others. I did think female anyway, was just hoping I was wrong since I'd specifically told CrazyCrays I wanted male. It takes so long for them to ever answer back so it'll be awhile before I hear from him. She's cool anyway though. Out and about a lot like my clarkiis, I like that.

The more I think about it, Otto, the better the idea of a sticky sounds. How do we make one? I've got super clear shot of the C.destructor female, P.clarkii male and white P.clarkii female. I bet Black Sun's got great shots of several species.
I have to show you all a face picture of this new destructor girl I got. I'm really liking her a lot. Although it seems she's not going to be as passive with top fish as my other crays :-O She flew all over the tank trying to catch the fish I put in there. I had to trade them out & put some mean Gold Gouramis in with her. Oh, and I named her Blue's Clues. It just sort of fit.

Loving the color!

To make a sticky someone would have to make an awesome thread with all the info and then Lupin or another mod would have to make it a sticky. I know Lupin knows a lot about sexing snails, too. Then all we'll need is some shrimp info and we would have the basics covered.

"The sex of yabbies can be determined externally by the
position of the reproductive or genital openings. The male
gonopores, or sexual organs, are located at the base of the
fifth pair, or rearmost pair, of walking legs (pereiopods)
while the female gonopores are found at the base of the
third , or middle, pair of legs. Breeding
maturity is reached when the yabby is approximately 6-10
cm in length. "

Also sometimes the male will develop small orange patches on the outsides of his claws (chelipeds).
