I bought these cherry barbs a few weeks ago from a local fish store and they have long tails, just long tails no other fins are long. I wanted to add to the collection but all other cherry barbs I have found have short tails. Is this a defect? A different variation? A morph? I can’t find any information on ones with just long tails. Does anyone have any information on this?

Sorry for the poor photos don’t have a great camera

29gallon
1 male betta
8 cherry barbs
8 panda corys
2 otocinclus
3 khuli loaches

Cherry Barbs have been around for many years. The long tail probably produced by man like the long fin creations.

Nothing different, just the long fin gene. The "longfin" trait acts differently in every species, and is very likely caused by mutations specific to those species. Some, like clownfish, can have multiple longfin genes that do different things, as there's that awful looking one that makes the fins long stiff and jagged, and the other that makes them fluffy.

Although fin shaped differences are commoon occuurances in many species naturally, this is a man-induced trait.
Just like the long fins and color varieties in oscars, betta or guppies.
If for some reason it benifits the species in their survival in nature, as a species, genetics will favor iit naturally, if it is a hindrance will not be favored.
There are many thing humans find attractive as adornments, but nature deems frivolous..
