Does anyone here have chickens or ducks?

i used to keep abandoned duck eggs and hatch them, then raise the babies to adulthood. Not the most exciting experience, but it is fun to have them imprint on you

Looks like a nice source of feeders.

Serious question...how do you "keep" ducks outdoors, I mean, with the whole flying thing and all? lol...

Lol, funny you mention that. About 8 years ago I bought a pair of mallards and I clipped their flight feathers. They molt in the summer and grew new ones and flew away in the fall (we have a large public lake down the street that never freezes, this is where I think they go). In the spring time the same original hen comes to our house and lays eggs in our garden and uses the pond I made for her. So she's kind of wild I guess. Sometimes one or two of her daughters come back and use the garden to raise their young as well. I feed them so they keep coming back every year.

Never! How could you feed one of those cute little babies to a snake? Plus you don't want to mess with that duck. She is a very, very good mother and extremely protective. Notice how she's not too happy with me taking that photo? I've personally seen her chase off dogs, cats, skunks, raccoons and hawks twice her size.

One of the coolest pets I ever had was one of the babies I hatched from this female. One year after all her eggs hatched, I went into the garden to remove the unfertilized eggs. Well on inspection I noticed that one was still trying to hatch and there were ants all over the egg. So I brought it inside and let it hatch in a shoe box. Needless to say after hatching, the duckling thought I was it's mama. She followed me around everywhere like a dog. All my friends though it was the coolest thing. I would take her to parties and she'd stay with me wherever I went. The ladies though it was the cutest thing. She didn't know she was a duck and that was her downfall in the end. One day I came home to find that a Hawk killed her. She never learned to avoid predators :(

Ive always wanted to keep ducks.

Their very cool pets, if they're tame. One bad thing is that they are very messy. I was constantly cleaning that pond out. And the filter gets clogged with their feathers when they are molting. I also have the hardest time keeping them out of my koi pond.

I once kept a duckling when I was a child. Very cool and an experience to keep....
