chickens

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I keep chickens, only a few. We keep them penned up do to the many foxes. coyotes, and hawks that live around us, although one person I know lets a pretty big pack of them wander free around their yard. We don't eat them, just for pets and eggs. I don't know why, but about half my friends all keep chickens too, pretty popular I guess.

Wow Darth, do you live on a farm?

i used to keep abandoned duck eggs and hatch them, then raise the babies to adulthood. Not the most exciting experience, but it is fun to have them imprint on you

My mom did the same thing with some unhatched eggs. She has a hybrid mallard/black duck. It is old and doesn't fly much anymore, but he still has free reign.

The thing that you need to be warned about for MI people, she got hit with a 1k fine and 1k in registration fees from DNR. Once she got the registration approved they dropped the 1k fine.

We raise chickens for eggs. They run free around the yard. We lose quite a few little ones to hawks, and we had a Bobcat that was taking chickens right out of our yard 2 years ago (after the 11th chicken she had to go to Bobcat Heaven...) :( I don't like losing chickens, but it is so cool to watch them out foraging. Also, I hardly have to feed them from April through September!

I have a mixed flock for eggs (and soon exhibition!) with my goat, sheep, and horses. Plus normal pets (and fish!).

Lol, funny you mention that. About 8 years ago I bought a pair of mallards and I clipped their flight feathers. They molt in the summer and grew new ones and flew away in the fall (we have a large public lake down the street that never freezes, this is where I think they go). In the spring time the same original hen comes to our house and lays eggs in our garden and uses the pond I made for her. So she's kind of wild I guess. Sometimes one or two of her daughters come back and use the garden to raise their young as well. I feed them so they keep coming back every year.

That is so cool!!!!!!!!!!My brother loves ducks!!!! And when I say love I mean obsessed. He has 25 rubber ducks and I'm pretty sure he would love to see all those ducklings.
