Chinese Giant Salamanders.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I remember reading about them a while back- I think they mainly eat crusteceans or molluscs, and I think they can bite VERY hard. If keeping them is anything like keeping sirens or others types of large amphibians, then they require really clean water, and non-aggressive tank mates that can't fit in their mouth.

I thought they were protected. Strange that you could buy one for a pet.

I seen video footage of a guy messin with ine that was like 4 feet long. This thing was nasty. It was trying to bite him and the way the guy was trying to stay away tells me that you don't want to get bit.

The Chinise Giant Salamander is a Giant; it measures 3.3 feet (1m) and is one of the world's largest salamander. It eats crabs, shrimps, aquatic insects, fish and frogs.Chinese giant salamander, the world's largest amphibian.Highly endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. Chinese giant salamanders are considered a delicacy, and their body parts are used in traditional Chinese medicines. I have heard they can get to 55lb.

saw it too it was huge

Have a cascade pond which is shallow, around 8" water and pebble bottom, hence considered keeping the rather flat looking specimen i saw.
Given its masty rep, think i will leave it alone.

If indeed protected, its sold openly in a HK fish market as food, alongside other smaller specimens. On cites list? Anyone know?
