Do these need a school? Or can they survive on their own?

I think they are fine on their own. They get pretty big, and lose the stripes as they grow.

They get big, duller, uglier and need cold water, BTW. Oh, and are NOT captive-bred. But are interesting fishes, in their own way.

I'v kept mine by itself (well, its the only Chinese high fin banded in the tank) in a 65 gallon with the temperature kept around 74° Fahrenheit for a few months and he's been doing alright.

if you get one, keep it in the same temperature water(tropical or cold water)that you buy it in or expect a high mortality rate.

I have had one of these fish for five years. He is about 11-12 inches long. My temp stays about 80 degrees year round. He eats blood worms, black worms, shrimp pellets & spirulina flakes. He is truly a stunner and he is developing his dolphin-like head, back fin is still high. He is in a 180-gal community tank and doing very well.
