chinese soft shell... my girlfriends dad found one a few days ago right now he is in a 55gal unhappy with less then an inch of gravel and only a make shift ramp to climb up. he has a 10" shell length and probably a 6-7inch neck. i know he needs to be fully covered by sand not gravel and water needs to be low enough for him to stick his head out of the water with out exposing himself from his under sand hiding...he eats craw fish and ghost shrimp and a few guppies...i was wondering realistically how big of a tank and what type of setup would it take to keep this guy i know they get 36" or so...and although he is ugly he looks awesomely beautiful in his own way. if i dont think i can keep hime realistically ill let him go in the area her dad found him...list your info please...and thank you

now im reading that they get ten inches...which this one is ten inches exact shell with like a 6-7 inch neck stretch...check em out

i know this isnt the tank he is going to stay in dont worry...now here he is

I doubt soft shells are native to Hawaii. You might try an donate him to a local school or pet shop instead.

I'm kind of worried about that gravel in the tank. Your turtle might eat it by accident. If you end up keeping him I would give him a bigger tank with a sand bottom or a bottom with large stream bed rocks, too big for him to ingest. Heck, why not keep him outside in some escape proof pond?

he bites...there goes the school idea...most pet shops here wont take one his size...specially cause he bites hard and fast...your right they arent native to hawaii how ever they were brought as a food source for the large and vairious asian populations we have here in the islands and were released into the streams and ponds of the island and they are now thriving and can be find all over the windward side of the island...so i dont feel that i will be hurting the native species of our island any more then it already has(especially since he was found crossing the road not to far from a marsh)...but i am trying to see if any of my friends want him instead...cause he is really cool looking and big... jars take this guy ...nah i know you wont...

i know the gravel and tank are a problem right now...i am trying to find some one to take him or else i will let him go where her dad found him i know he needs a 125 with sand to hide under to be happy i cant provide that which is why im trying to find a home for him...

id keep him...get a small kiddie pool

i dont have anywhere to setup a pond that he cant escape from otherwise i would and i have had three friends already decline him...on thinks hes ugly...and she has to many red ears, the other doesnt have any room, and the third is scared he'll lose a finger when he trys to clean the tanks...so im still lookin

They max at about 13". A 70-90G tank would be suitable, if you had a good few inches of play sand substrate. Remove the gravel, it wont do any good. That Oscar wont last long either. My 2" Chinese Softshell can nearly draw blood, that thing will make a quick meal out of an Oscar.
Good Luck!
Paul

Thats not a chinese softy...... Its a smooth soft shell turtle..... And yes they get big to. I recommend a pond.
