Thats not a chinese softy...... Its a smooth soft shell turtle..... And yes they get big to. I recommend a pond.

i have a chinese soft shell and it looks just like the one in the pic to me

either way it found a home at my friends house in a 400 gal pond with a bunch of ryukins that will all eventually get eaten but he was way more excited bout the turtle then the ryukins...plus his fav ryukins are in tanks in the house...so long CHINESE SOFT SHELL TURTLE...cause thats what it is...this thread is dead...hahahahahahahah ha ....ha ha....ha ...ha ..nah .ahh ...ha...dead...but the turtles not ill post pics when i have time to go to his house and take some i only had time to drop it off cause i had to work...peace

Like I've said before, some if not all species of water turtles have homing instincts like pigeons. He might stay in you friends pond or he might try to find his way home if it's not too far away from where you got him. Good luck and I hope the pond is escape proof!

it has a 10" fence with a 45degree inward angle so cant climb...im pretty sure...

i had a red eared slider the climbed a 10 inch fence, never saw it again

I've seen a wood turtle climb a 4' chain-link fence before. It was pretty impressive.

i showed my friend that pic and we'll see if he alters his fence or not...hopefully the turtle doesnt get out before he gets around to ficing that.
