chips in arowanas?

Why do they put the chips in the asian arowanas? and what is it for?

just curious :smurf
 
all i knew was that they put the chips into the arowana to id them, i thought they were tracking chips?

I'm just curious if they are in any sort or way a tracking ship. So if some one brought them in to the states, could they find out through the chip?.

they normmaly chip them at around 4-5". sometimes younger. But thats besides the point

I just wana know if its a tracking chip, it would be smart of them if it was.

Actually the Arowana can be tracked if they are shipped through legal means with proper documentation. For example, all tag numbers of the Arowanas are to be declared to CITES when they are about to be sent from one country to another. From the tag record, CITES will know where is the last destination (country) the Arowana has arrived.

But lets say the Arowana is shipped to Canada by legal means but that Arowana is smuggled to the US, then that Arowana cannot be traced anymore as the last destination record with CITES is that it reached Canada.
