Chlorimine removal and the continuious water change drip system???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Awesome help guys I really appreciate it, I put my order in today so Ill post up the results in a week or so. Went with the 3 stage (1micron,stage 2 and stage 3) and to change out every 3 months will still be alot cheaper than all the prime and work moving buckets lol

Awesome info guys, thanks
Now what types of filters are you using? 2 stage with both inline? or are you getting away with just 1 filter?
Also how long or how many gallons before you have to replace the filter? And are they re fillable?
Thanks

I bought the 3 stage kit with a 1 micron pre filter, I went with the carbon block filters instead of the refillable on advise of the filterguys.

I'm sure there will be a bit of an ammonia spike, but if you already have a pretty bid bioload, then you shouldn't notice it at all. The level of ammonia that will come out will be nothing compared to a heavily stocked tank.

I had a a spike that lasted less then 1 week, and topped out close to 1ppm. Think the spike will depend on the amount you drip and the amount of chlormine. Your filter will only house as bio as the load supports, so there is always a catch up to do. However depending on how much you drop and how much chloramine you might not notice it.

You figured this to be cheaper then prime? I paid like 47 or something shipped for the same filter. I plan to swap every 4 months, I figure prime bought from pet smart is 10.00 for 250ml. So thats about 16 150 Gallon watter changes dosing my whole 220 gallon setup. That is about 3 months of 50% water changes. So I can get 6 months of water changes for like $20.00, so for me prime is cheaper. However I would rather 10.00 more per month or so to not have to do water changes.

Drip systems become really efficient when you are changing a lot of water and running a lot of tanks.

So here's a stupid question. Does chlorine evaporate out of the water over 24 hours? Couldn't I just drip water into a holding tank and once a day dump it into the tank and avoid filters and/or prime?

If you only have chlorine in your water, then yes you could. I would also recommend having a pump in there to agitate the water to help the chlorine dissipate.

Why risk it? what if they change from Chlorine to Chloramine? Cheap is never the way to go with the health of your pets.

Scratch that they already do.

(4) Chlorine, (Total Residual)
In EPCOR's distribution system, the total residual chlorine is composed entirely of chloramine. Chloramine is a disinfectant that results when chlorine is combined with ammonia. It is a much weaker disinfectant than free chlorine but it stays in water longer, is more stable in distribution systems, and can more effectively penetrate any film or deposit on a pipe to kill bacteria. Our approval sets limits of 0.5 - 2.5 mg/L for drinking water. EPCOR's treated water contains an average of 2.19 mg/L.

side note how awsome is it that your your water company gives daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports. My Company gives one a year, and they kept our utility money for about 30 years and never made any upkeep to the system. Now the EPA put the pimp smack down and hit them with 25Million in repairs, sucks they have to pay for that; oh wait they dont they pass the buck to the customers.

Our fees went up 15% this year and will go up as much as 10% each year for the next 5 years. Plus the changed from bi monthly billing to monthly billing so they can charge you two usage fees in the same time frame.

Sorry for the rant just been P'd with them lately thanks for letting me vent.

Im trying to set up the automatic drip system to a 300 gallon full of asian arrows and stingray, My city (edmonton) uses chlorimines and a tiny bit of chlorine.....
This threw a bit of a curveball but i am sure some of you are dealing with this already so here it goes....
Will this type of filter work to remove the chlorimines and make the water safe?

I was told i had to do it in [FONT=&quot]2 stages, the first stage being a catalytic carbon stage and the second being a chlorplus10 block, does this sound right?
Thanks for the help guys

nice a fellow edmontonian lol
im still a noob to fish but i wonder can you put water in a seperate container and use that in your drip system?

Nforced WOW what a link :) I know they jump up a few notches in the spring due to the run off from the mountians so now i know exactly :) Thanks A Bunch

Knifefish there is no way around it.... Either we are using PRIME or a 3 stage filter to get rid of the chlorimines..... But i am talking about large amounts of water to move weekly. I know guys still ageing water in town that seem to do ok with it???? dont know how or why but they even breed rays changing with tap water that has sat a week???
