Although carnivorous, it is not really a piscivore.
Looking at the body and mouth shape, lets you know it is fairly inept as predator of fast moving prey.
Instead it is more of an insectavore (those that drop on the surface), and a feeder on aquatic crustaceans, mollusks and worms.
H coryphaenoids (often confused with it, as they are very similar in appearance) is known as an opportunistic scale eater, not chasing down other fish, but taking a quick bite of those unsuspecting fish that get too close.
Ya my guys will jump to catch afids that sometimes come and hover under the lights over the water in summertime.. they have great aim too

I have fed live glass shrimp and he is not very effective at catching but he does eventually. I can see the bug catcher as he is always staring at the surface.

:cry::cry:Well, I was looking forward to having multiple chocolate cichlids in the same tank. I came home for lunch and found the smaller one dead on the floor.

Snap!! Lol, I think mines about the same age/size as yours. Mines getting some really nice rustic earthy colours now. Various tones of green and brown, deep reds too, looking almost purple at times. And what a placid temperament, I love this species of cichlid.
